The VirtualBox and VMware images are created in such a way that they are less in size but contains all the standard packages required for instant run. Launch VirtualBox. Click “New” to create a new virtual machine. Give the new virtual machine a suitable name. In this example, I will create an Ubuntu virtual machine, so I will select the “Type” as “Linux” and the “Version” as “Ubuntu64. I experienced the same problem while trying to install a 64-bit version of Linux Mint inside VirtualBox. I opened VirtualBox, clicked on NEW, entered a name for the virtual machine, choose the type of operating system, but when I wanted to choose a version, I only saw 32-bit versions and NO 64-bit. Here are the steps to creating your first virtual machine (VM) within VirtualBox
- Select New
- Enter in a Name
- Type: Choose Linux
- Version: Ubuntu (64-bit) [If you don’t see it, enable virtualization and disable Hyper-V]
- Memory Size: Personally I choose 10000 MB. [This will improve performance using VM]
- Create a Virtual Hard Disk Now
- Click Create
- Within “Create Virtual Hard Disk”, choose a size significantly larger than 8GB as you will need at least 6GB to install Ubuntu. I have chosen 60GB. Don’t worry about the VM actually using this much.
- Hard Disk File Type: VDI
- Storage: Dynamically Allocated[Only uses space when you need it]
- Click Create
You will now see that your virtual machine is created.
- Right click it and select Settings.
- Under Storage, click “Controller: IDE”
- Go to the path where you downloaded your Ubuntu version and select it
- Click OK
- Click Start
Installing Ubuntu On Virtualbox
The VM should open with an installation screen for Ubuntu. Go ahead and Install Ubuntu using the default settings.
